WANDELAARS “Verbroken” LP [SORCERY-052]

Treading across lands of myriad mist and fearful folklore does the raw atmospheric black metal misery of Wandelaars tread great sorrow across foetid paths of forbidden fog and phantasmal nostalgia.

Scaling great mountain peaks of immortal stone, Wandelaars is an eerie entity hailing from the coastal mystery of the Netherlands, plying a foreboding spellcraft of black metal atmospherics since the age of 2014. Headed by a single sorcerer by name of Robert van Rumund (Melancholie & Faceless Entity), Wandelaars took a three year period of hibernation from 2017, only to be awakened from its sagacious slumber and reinvigorated for a pair of full-length incantations, Aletsch, a forlorn trek of long drawn trinity spell sorrow, being the first, with Verbroken unleashed two years later to further refine the sound of the debut and focus its intent by mark of shorter length and concentrated creativity.

Verbroken is the loneliest of journeys across a haunted landscape of foreboding mystery and entrancing hermeticism. Wanderlaars here has crafted an incantation of drawn out atmospheric black metal spells, arching passages of instrumental enigma, droning tremolo melodics, deep black rasps, haunting synth aura, phantasm ritual percussion, vast hinterlands production and a dedicated thematic of wilderness abstractions that all come together in alchemical expression of the natural order. A coalescence of the ancient earth and immortal shamanism, Verbroken is a truly evocative expression of wandering black metal mystery, one in which instrumentation and hypnotic soundscapes take favour over immediate composition, instead focusing on the overall adventure and seeking to whisk those experiencing it into sombre realms where no mortal has ever dared to tread.
