Grand Theft's lone 1972 LP stands as a peculiar, potent artefact of early-70s heavy rock, conceived in Seattle as a tongue-in-cheek jab at arena pomp, but abandoning parody for brute force. In a single combustible session, it leant on Dave Baroh's serrated guitar tone, Kevin Marin's thick, overdriven bass and Phil Klitgaard's forceful, unvarnished drumming, bringing about an impulsive coil of sound. 'Scream (It's Eating Me Alive)' and 'Closer to Herfy's' channel late-night caffeine and sharp wit into compact bursts of proto-metal urgency, and with DJ/manager Burl Barer drumming up regional radio attention, the record outlived the band itself, its scarcity and rawness cementing a cult rep within the Pacific Northwest's hard-rock lineage.
